What is the Source Reference in submission Vault?

Answer:

The Source Reference is the relationship between Submissions Archive documents and the source file in Submissions. When a submission is imported, Submissions Archive attempts to set this relationship if the MD5 checksum of the file in the submission matches a document in Vault. Vault users can also set this relationship manually if it is not set automatically when imported.
