Question:

A Vault user tries to save an update or creation of an object field. Why does it show a field that is required, but not highlighted in yellow?

Answer:

The field has a Validation Rule on it.  Fields with Validation Rules are not required or not required until the validation criteria are met or not. So, they are never highlighted.
