Question:
Some users may encounter an error: Javascript: void(0) while browsing the Vault. How can the error be avoided?
Answer:
This error indicates a mistake stemming from the browser, which prevents accessing a particular website. The error only appears when the user tries to access some websites, but not all of them. The root cause of the error can be traced to a resident pop-up blocker in the internet browser. Also, it may be triggered by a proxy server if connecting to the internet through a proxy.
There are several ways to avoid this error, depending on what caused the Javascript error in the first place. If a proxy server causes it and connects to the internet using a shared computer, it may be a regular occurrence. In such a case, contact a network administrator for assistance.
Otherwise, use the following steps to avoid the error:
Option 1: Enabling Javascript
Javascript may be disabled on a browser. Javascript is a plugin that is mostly disabled by default on all browsers. Enable Javascript to render its page using the technology manually. It can always revert the changes if this does not work.
- Internet Explorer/Edge
For Internet Explorer, can check if Javascript is working.
- In the open Internet Explorer/Edge window, click on Tools.
- Select Internet Options.
- Select the Security tab and click on the custom level button.
- Scroll downwards until reaching the Scripting of Java applets option under the bullet Scripting.
- Ensure that Enable is selected, and then click Ok.
- Google Chrome
While the overall Internet Explorer settings also apply to Chrome, check the Java status within Chrome:
- Locate the icon at the top right-hand side of the Google Chrome window (3 parallel horizontal dashes). Click on it.
- Move the cursor downward and click on Settings.
- Go to Show Advanced Settings.
- Under Privacy, click on Content Settings.
- Under JavaScript, click on Allow all sites to run JavaScript (recommended).
- Click OK.
- Firefox
For Firefox, do the following:
- Click on the icon in the top right corner (similar to Chrome’s).
- Click Add-ons.
- Click on the Plugins tab.
- Click the Java ™ Platform plugin
- Check the Always activate button.
Enable Java on the browser. Restart the browser and try accessing the website which triggered the error. The Javascript: void(0) should no longer appear. If it does, try the following alternatives as well.
Option 2: Reload the page by bypassing the cache
This option refreshes corrupted or possibly outdated files. While holding the Shift key, click on the Reload button. The shortcut for this is CTRL + F5. Mac users can use Command + Shift + R.
Option 3: Clear the cache
The cache of the browser is used by websites to store temporary information so that data can be fetched from local storage instead of fetching from the internet. However, there are numerous instances where this cache can get corrupted or outdated. If this happens, Javascript might not be able to work properly. Resetting the cache might work in this case.
Option 4: Remove cookies from the browser
Try to clear all the cookies from the browser. Nowadays, almost all websites make use of cookies to track user preferences and for security purposes as well. If the cookies are somehow outdated or corrupt on the computer, get the Javascript Void error message.
