Generating a HAR File for Troubleshooting Veeva Vault Related Issues

Question:

Veeva Product Support or the Global Service Center may occasionally need additional information about the network requests that are generated in the Web Browsers of Vault Administrators and Vault End Users. Veeva Product Support or the Global Service Center may request to record a HAR file while that issue occurs.

Note: A HAR - short for HTTP Archive - is a JSON-formatted file that records all HTTP(S) traffic between a web browser and a website. It is a common format used for troubleshooting web browsing issues, performance analysis. HAR files capture detailed information about requests and responses, including headers, timing, and content, making them useful for identifying problems and analyzing web behavior.

  • Troubleshooting: Identify and diagnose issues like slow page loading, errors, or broken functionality.
  • Performance Analysis: Analyze page load times, resource usage, and identify performance bottlenecks.

How to generate a HAR file in commonly used Web Browsers?

Generate a HAR File in Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and go to the page where the issue is occurring.
  2. On the top right hand side, look for the ⋮ button and select More Tools > Developer Tools.
  3. From the panel that appears, select the Network tab. The menu must stay open while the issue is being reproduced.
  4. Look for a round record button in the upper left corner of the tab, and make sure it is red . If it is grey, click the button once to start recording.
  5. Check the Preserve log box.
  6. Click the grey crossed circle button to clear any existing logs from the Network tab.
  7. Reproduce the issue while the network requests are recorded.
  8. Click the Download Arrow button, Export HAR (sanitized)... to download, and save the file locally to the computer. 
  9. Upload the HAR file to the Veeva Product Support Ticket for further investigation.

The instructions are the same for a MAC computer or a Windows computer.

Generate a HAR File in Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox and go to the page where the issue is occurring.
  2. Open the Network Monitor.
  3. Reproduce the issue while the network requests are recorded.
  4. Right-click anywhere under the File column and click Save All As HAR.
  5. Save the HAR file locally on the computer.
  6. Upload the HAR file to the Veeva Product Support Ticket for further investigation.

Generate a HAR File in Safari

  1. Open Safari and go to the Develop menu. If the Develop menu is not visible, follow the instructions in this article from the Safari User Guide: Use the developer tools in the Develop menu in Safari on Mac.
  2. Select Show Web Inspector.
  3. Click the Network tab. The tab must be kept open while the issue is being reproduced.
  4. Reproduce the issue while the network requests are recorded.
  5. Click the Export icon and save the HAR file locally on the computer.
  6. Upload the HAR file to the Veeva Product Support Ticket for further investigation.

Generate a HAR File in Microsoft Edge

The steps are very similar to Google Chrome.

  1. Open Edge and go to the Network tool.
  2. The menu must stay open while the issue is being reproduced.
  3. Look for a round record button in the upper left corner of the tab, and make sure it is red. If it is grey, click the button once to start recording.
  4. Check the Preserve log box.
